How It Works

Plastisol is the most widely used screen printing ink in the decorated apparel industry. It’s a PVC-based ink that sits on top of the fabric surface rather than absorbing into fibers, producing bright, opaque, highly saturated colors with excellent consistency across large production runs.

Industry Standard

Plastisol requires heat curing at approximately 320°F to bond permanently with the garment. Available in virtually unlimited Pantone-matched colors, plastisol delivers reliable results on cotton, blends, and most standard fabrics. It’s the default ink choice for the vast majority of commercial screen printing due to its ease of use, color accuracy, and cost-effectiveness at volume.

Visual Effect

Bold, vibrant, opaque colors with high saturation. Clean, sharp edges. Consistent color reproduction across entire runs — from the first piece to the last. Soft plastisol formulas are available for a lighter deposit with reduced hand feel.

Technical Specs

  • Ink Type: PVC-based plastisol (sits on top of fabric); heat-cured
  • Mesh Count: 110–305 (varies by design detail)
  • Cure Temp: ~320°F
  • Best Fabrics: 100% cotton (best), 50/50 blends, polyester with low-bleed formulas

Pros

  • Industry standard — most reliable and predictable ink
  • Brightest, most opaque colors available
  • Works on light and dark garments
  • Cost-effective at volume
  • Widest color range (any Pantone match)
  • Fastest production turnaround

Limitations

  • Heavier hand feel than water-based or discharge
  • Can crack over time if applied too thick
  • PVC-based (less eco-friendly than water-based alternatives)
  • Not a “retail-premium” feel compared to water-based
  • Risk of dye migration on polyester without specialty formulas
